In order to effectively teach a handstand in a yoga class a teacher does not need to have a completely successful freestanding handstand however they should be competent when it comes to understanding these concepts:

  •      - shoulder mobility

     - core strength and application

     - styles of alignment

     - approaches to entry and exist

     - dynamics of balancing

If these five areas are not understood by the teacher, they may be putting students at risk and steering them in the wrong direction.  Teaching handstands is a complex endeavor in which one encounters physical difficulty, fear, and emotional vulnerability. It is my hope to share what I have learned over the course of practicing yoga for 13 years, circus style hand-balancing for five years and acrobatics for five years in order to help teachers feel more confident when working with students and for more people to experience the joy of a freestanding handstand.

During this 16 hour training we will deeply investigate these five topics and come to understand them in the context of working with students of a variety of levels and abilities.  This work involves learning a series of drills and exercises designed to build the practitioners strength, awareness and confidence and learning how to transmit those drills to students.  We will also thoroughly address the practice of spotting, assisting students in a way that is safe and permits the student to focus fully on their work. Finally we will examine ways to include handstands in vinyasa and alignment based yoga sequences that is inviting and safe for all students.

If you are a yoga teacher who is not completely confident in your own handstand practice or has encountered confusion when working with your students, please consider attending this training.

Training will run 12:30 - 4:30 PM Saturday and Sunday of both weekends, students are strongly encouraged to attend the 10 - 11:30 AM Architectural Movement Class prior to the training.
